
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most well-known for her social activistism, acting talents, and ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the name "delicate and sensitive" at the age of eight years old. Latifah started singing in the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and was the first person to perform in public when she sang a version of "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was a catalyst. She was attuned to students and the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey, also called D.J., was invited to the celebration.
