Ormond was the daughter of Josephine of a lab technician as well as John Ormond (a stockbroker), in Epsom, Surrey. Ormond is the third of five children to her parents. She went to private schools, initially Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early lead performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady began to draw attention. After a short time in arts school, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art which she completed in 1988. Ormond first came to prominence on British TV in the series Traffik. This show focused on the illegal trade in heroin across the world, from the far East to Europe. Ormond was the heroin-addicted kid of the main character, a Home Office minister working to stop heroin imports. The role received a fawning reception right from the start.
